Abstract

This research explores the dynamic complexity of marriage pillars (rukun nikah) in Indonesian society, transcending conventional understanding as merely an administrative procedure. Employing a qualitative ethnographic approach and Herbert Blumer's symbolic interactionism theory, the study investigates how each element of marriage pillars—from prospective bride and groom, guardian, witnesses, ijab-qabul, to dowry—undergoes significant social transformation. The research was conducted in the Batam region using data triangulation methods through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentary studies. Findings reveal that marriage pillars constitute a complex arena where social, cultural, and spiritual interests dynamically interact. Each element undergoes reinterpretation reflecting a shift from traditional structures towards more egalitarian, gender-responsive, and equality-attentive approaches. The research affirms that Islamic marriage practices in Indonesia are not static entities but open systems continuously adapting to social changes while preserving spiritual substance. This study offers a new perspective in understanding contemporary socio-religious transformations.
